As Milwaukee continues to grow as a Great Lakes cruise destination, the Port of Milwaukee needed infrastructure capable of welcoming some of the largest vessels navigating the region. Walbec is helping deliver that next chapter with the Milwaukee South Shore Cruise Dock, a new marine facility designed to accommodate Seawaymax-class vessels and expand the city’s cruise capacity.
The project centers on a 50,000-square-foot marine platform supported by an extensive sheeting, waler, and tieback system. Approximately 750 linear feet of catwalk access supports vessel mooring operations and helps establish the facility as Milwaukee’s third designated cruise dock and future primary port of call for larger cruise ships.
PROJECT HIGHLIGHTS
- Adapting to Lake Michigan conditions — Unpredictable weather and wave conditions presented an ongoing challenge for marine operations. By planning simultaneous land- and water-based work, crews could shift activities when conditions made barge work unsafe, maintaining productivity while keeping safety at the forefront.
- Coordinating complex marine construction — Constructing the platform required careful sequencing of sheeting, structural components, tiebacks, catwalks, and marine operations within an active waterfront environment. Detailed planning and field coordination helped keep each phase moving safely and efficiently.
- Building for Milwaukee’s future — The new dock expands the Port’s capacity to welcome large cruise vessels and the visitors they bring to the region, supporting Milwaukee’s continued growth as a Great Lakes cruise destination and creating infrastructure that will serve the waterfront for years to come.
