HMA Paving Field Supervisor

Under the direction of the Area Managers, The HMA Paving Supervisor is responsible for efficient HMA personnel scheduling, overseeing paving equipment needs and repair, and reinforcement of continuous quality improvement in the area of HMA laydown and compaction.
Role and Responsibilities:
- Manage the daily paving operations in assigned area(s) in conjunction with operations management groups.
- Monitor job planning and job execution in conjunction with project management to maximize safety, quality & production goals.
- Lead employees on proper safety procedures by being a champion of the company's safety expectations and programs.
- Coach the "Crews for Success" training program and perform foreman and crew evaluations.
- Partner with the Area Manager and Human Resources Business Partner on personnel issues.
- Partner with Human Resources to facilitate recruiting and hiring of field crew personnel.
- Collaborate with the Repair Shop Manager, Foreman, and Mechanics on repairs and maintenance work on paving equipment (prioritize, coordinate and review repair methods, costs, etc.).
- Coordinate equipment transfers with Transportation Dept. and Logistics Supervisor.
- Coordinate equipment and pre-job planning with Project Managers, Transportation and Scheduling to ensure appropriate equipment allocation on the job site.
- Train foreman and crew members using the quality manual and training procedures, while adhering to best practices guidelines.
- Understand, to an expert level, the machine operations and automation operations of various paving equipment.
- Troubleshoot and correct laydown problems, mat blemishes, screed adjustments, etc.
- Possess understanding of aggregate properties for various mixes, including advanced knowledge of density requirements.
- Coordinate with quality control and technical services on resolving issues regarding mix or density properties in the field.
- Evaluate new HMA equipment specifications and participate in equipment purchases.
- Arrange and monitor product demonstrations of paving equipment, and provide feedback to Operations group and Operations Manager on product demonstrations.
- Monitor and approve time off requests for all paving crew employees in the area, through the electronic records calendar.
- Possess a strong understanding of Wisconsin, state DOT specifications for HMA, Safety and CMV operation.
- Lead employees through the adherence to and demonstration of company guidelines and expectations, contained in the employee handbook.
- Provide continuous improvement analysis of paving operations.
- Ability to understand state and municipal plan and lay-out projects, prior to construction commencement.
- Act as a consultant for area management and purchasing on paving equipment acquisitions.
- Foster relationships with external and internal customers by portraying leadership and professionalism, at all times.
- Assist in the training of foremen, project managers and field crew personnel.
- Display a positive attitude and personal appearance.
- Demonstrate proper work ethic and dedication to the job, lead by example.
- Assist with continuous improvement initiatives and implementation of such initiatives.
Qualifications and Education Requirements:
- High degree of ethical standards in personal and business conduct
- Self-directed and motivated; able to manage multiple conflicting and changing priorities
- Minimum of 10 years of experience at the field level, laying and finishing HMA
- Prior experience as a Foreman
- Excellent verbal and written communication, consulting, conflict management, interpersonal, and negotiation skills
- Valid Driver's License with a satisfactory driving record
- Working knowledge of CMV guidelines and regulations
- Trustworthy and discrete with confidential information
- Adherence to anti-trust laws and regulations
- Excellent client management and business literacy skills.
- Ability to develop strong, trusting relationships in order to gain support and achieve results.
- Ability to assist in the development and implementation of new competitive strategies to combat complex business issues related to HMA markets, products, etc.
- Ability to take the initiative in identifying and addressing organizational needs, including making recommendations and implementing the changes.
