Asphalt Terminal Operations Manager

Position summary:

Under the direction of the Vice President, the Asphalt Terminal Operations Manager is to provide daily management of all Asphalt Terminals including, but not limited to, the following areas of responsibility: Safety, personnel, facilities, material blends and quality control. This position will collaborate with the manufacturing area managers to schedule terminal personnel and material production to provide a quality product at a competitive price.

Role and Responsibilities

  • Participate in safety huddles or meetings (at least one per month per terminal)
  • Conduct all site specific training for personnel working on company sites, as well as both internal and external personnel utilizing the safety department as necessary
  • Participate and lead the annual safety audits for the asphalt terminals
  • Monitor safe work practices for all personnel on site through on-site visits/inspections
  • Know and understand the company standards, requirements and expectations regarding the facilities
  • Be versed in the State and Federal regulations for Asphalt Petroleum Terminals and work with the environmental department to maintain compliance
  • Maintain truck scale reliability and compliance with state requirements
  • Coordinate and schedule incoming product logistics with vendors delivering product to sites
  • Work with railroad on FRA compliance regarding our rail sidings and required emergency training
  • Work with utilities regarding demand/constraints for all CRM asphalt terminals
  • Take the lead and work with the Director of Government Affairs on all local and political issues with respect to company terminals
  • Schedule all plant personnel daily, making the necessary staffing adjustments necessary due to customer requirements, scheduled repairs and maintenance
  • Communicate terminal staffing and operations with the Vice President weekly
  • Coordinate planned and unplanned repairs with appropriate personnel or vendors
  • Verify and facilitate proper credentials, service agreements and insurance requirements with vendors working on company property
  • Track hours of terminal personnel daily and communicate this information to the Vice President as necessary
  • Schedule and coordinate all facets of terminal operations for all terminals
  • Understand all components of asphalt terminals, including receiving, transferring, storage, heating and loading
  • Be able to safely operate a variety of equipment within the tank farm facility, to include, but not limited to: pumps, valves, blowers, compressors, material handling equipment, thermal fluid heaters and steam pressure vessels
  • Understand and communicate the best practices for asphalt, as well as emulsion production and storage
  • Prepare, monitor and manage the cost side of the asphalt terminal budgets, alerting the Vice President of deviations from budget
  • Review Polymer AC report weekly for accuracy, as well as to help facilitate production
  • Assist manufacturing in soliciting bids for asphalt cement hauling contracts
  • Identify training needed for terminal personnel
  • Manage our Gladstone, Michigan's recycled oil terminal and know the different regulatory and operational requirements
  • Create annual and long term preventative maintenance plans for each terminal
  • Coordinate with the Vice President regarding the storage plan based on workload forecast

Qualifications and Education Requirements

  • High School Diploma or equivalent
  • Valid driver's license and satisfactory driving record
  • Minimum of five (5) years prior work experience in supervising production employees preferably with a petroleum facility
  • Must have the ability to lift 50 pounds and to stand, sit and walk for long periods of time
  • Must have the ability to drive a pick-up truck on a daily basis
  • Requires use of computerized equipment and technology
  • This position requires knowledge and awareness of site hazards. Must be able to wear required personal protective equipment (PPE)
  • Position requires ability to work at multiple sites throughout Wisconsin and Michigan depending on business needs
  • Ability to work in a fast-paced, deadline oriented environment that requires complex, technical information and decision making
  • Must be able to present complex information in a clear and concise manner

Preferred Skills

  • Bachelor's Degree, Associates Degree, or an equivalent combination of training and work experience
  • Excellent verbal and written communication, consulting, conflict management, interpersonal and negotiation skills
