Position summary:

Under the direction of the Technical Services Manager (TSM), the Quality Control Supervisor is responsible for effectively managing, coaching, and developing a team of quality control technicians while performing proactive management of construction and manufacturing quality control processes and preparatory requirements. Success is defined as:

Role and Responsibilities

  • Guarantee adherence with the requirements of the Walbec Group Quality Management System
  • Create a positive team culture grounded in supportive reinforcement, trust, openness, and honesty
  • Directly supervise a team of technicians
    • Plan, implement and ensure accurate completion of assignments and responsibilities of the team
    • Define work to be done while clearly communicating responsibilities and objectives
    • Set priorities for each team member
    • Make time available for team members, both at your request and theirs
    • Monitor performance, recognizing team member achievements and course-correcting when necessary
    • Effectively delegate with the highest degree of clarity in expectations
  • Verify each team member understands that all tests are performed per the standards and reported accurately and honestly. Continually discuss and reaffirm with all team members the demands for ethical compliance and the highest degree of integrity in performing their responsibilities
  • Responsible for working with other Quality Control Supervisors to properly allocate equipment and resources
  • Schedule team members for maximum efficiency, approve their time each morning, and ensure the labs are staffed for optimal effectiveness. Ensure scheduled start times are adhered to and reported hours are accurate and complete
  • Collaborate with TSM’s, team members, and our customers to direct process changes to ensure materials are produced or installed per the specifications and ensure team members are communicating timely with plant and street foreman
  • Review all test results produced by team members in real-time, identifying potential concerns and assist them to proactively address those concerns. Assist with production troubleshooting and corrective actions to reduce risk
  • Verify required testing is 100% complete and facilitate the distribution of test results to engineers, consultants, and customers timely while conducting business professionally
  • Guarantee that all laboratories and equipment are calibrated, checked, and standardized (per AASHTO R18).
  • Certify that all their team members are properly trained, maintain current certifications for the testing required, supervised, and equipped with the necessary tools and equipment to ensure their personal safety.
  • Foster an environment that helps individuals perform effectively and productively by providing timely feedback, acquiring necessary resources, problem solving, and communicating openly
  • Demonstrate a thorough understanding of the most current specifications, process control, and material production troubleshooting and recognize how our equipment compares with the customer’s equipment to be able to predict and minimize potential risk
  • Emphasize a supportive environment that allows mistakes but not failure

  • Address performance concerns promptly and effectively
  • Evaluate the performance of team members and provide coaching and mentoring to ensure they reach their destination
  • Assist the TSM with the recruitment and on-boarding of new team members
  • Develop and nurture trusting relationships with others, both internally and externally
  • Perform other related duties as required and assigned

Qualifications and Education Requirements

  • High School Diploma or GED equivalent
  • A minimum of 3 years’ experience in inspection and testing of road and paving materials and construction; satisfactorily directed testing or inspection services, or both, of road and paving materials is acceptable.
  • Holds or is qualified for a current WisDOT HMA-TPC (WI), IDOT – HMA II (IL), or MDOT (MI) certification.

Required Skills

  • Demonstrated problem solving skills
  • Proven ability to effectively train, evaluate and communicate with others
  • Proven ability to oversee multiple and/or complex projects simultaneously
  • Must be proficient with computers, the Microsoft suite of programs, and an understanding of current technology trends
  • Must demonstrate excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • Ability to travel locally and regionally as needed
  • Knowledge of the principles, practices, specifications, and procedures of the industry
  • Certifications from WI, IL, and MI, as necessary, for testing aggregate, asphalt, and concrete
